Brandeis University - Was Hanukkah gift giving done in the past?
No. Pre-modern sources describe lighting the menorah, eating oil-based foods, and giving Hanukkah gelt (coins) to children and Torah teachers. Hanukkah gift giving was unknown.
Brandeis University & Time - When does Hanukkah gift giving appear?
In the late‑19th and especially the early‑20th‑century United States, Jewish parents began adding toys, books and clothing so their children would not feel left out during the surrounding Christmas season. This “Americanization” expanded rapidly after World War II.
Jewish Boston - Is there a theological tie to Hanukkah gift giving?
None. Christmas gift-giving originates from Christian and European folk traditions (St. Nicholas, Saturnalia, and later Victorian marketing), while Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Temple. The overlap is social and commercial, not liturgical or biblical.
Leviticus 18:3-4 - Do Not Go In The Way Of The Heathen
“After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do: and after the doings of the land of Canaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do: neither shall ye walk in their ordinances. Ye shall do my judgments, and keep mine ordinances, to walk therein: I am Yahwah your Elohim.”
Deuteronomy 12:30-32 - Obey YHWH Only
“Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise. Thou shalt not do so unto Yahwah thy Elohim: for every abomination to Yahwah, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods. What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.”
Thoughts: Egypt often symbolizes the world and worldly traditions. We are not to be like Egypt at all. We are instructed to keep the Law of Yahwah and not the traditions of man, primarily when they are rooted in the worship of other gods. It is idolatry. We should not add to Yahwah’s Days He appointed or diminish them by inserting traditions that are not in the Word of Yahwah.
1 Maccabees 4:36-55 - What Is Hanukkah About?
“Then said Judas and his brethren, Behold, our enemies are discomfited: let us go up to cleanse and dedicate the sanctuary. Upon this all the host assembled themselves together, and went up into mount Sion. And when they saw the sanctuary desolate, and the altar profaned, and the gates burned up, and shrubs growing in the courts as in a forest, or in one of the mountains, yea, and the priests' chambers pulled down; They rent their clothes, and made great lamentation, and cast ashes upon their heads, And fell down flat to the ground upon their faces, and blew an alarm with the trumpets, and cried toward heaven. Then Judas appointed certain men to fight against those that were in the fortress, until he had cleansed the sanctuary. So he chose priests of blameless conversation, such as had pleasure in the law: Who cleansed the sanctuary, and bare out the defiled stones into an unclean place. And when as they consulted what to do with the altar of burnt offerings, which was profaned; They thought it best to pull it down, lest it should be a reproach to them, because the heathen had defiled it: wherefore they pulled it down, And laid up the stones in the mountain of the temple in a convenient place, until there should come a prophet to shew what should be done with them. Then they took whole stones according to the law, and built a new altar according to the former; And made up the sanctuary, and the things that were within the temple, and hallowed the courts. They made also new holy vessels, and into the temple they brought the candlestick, and the altar of burnt offerings, and of incense, and the table. And upon the altar they burned incense, and the lamps that were upon the candlestick they lighted, that they might give light in the temple. Furthermore they set the loaves upon the table, and spread out the veils, and finished all the works which they had begun to make. Now on the five and twentieth day of the ninth month, which is called the month Casleu, in the hundred forty and eighth year, they rose up betimes in the morning, And offered sacrifice according to the law upon the new altar of burnt offerings, which they had made. Look, at what time and what day the heathen had profaned it, even in that was it dedicated with songs, and citherns, and harps, and cymbals. Then all the people fell upon their faces, worshipping and praising the God of heaven, who had given them good success.”
Thoughts: This follows the death of Alexander the Great, after which his predecessor, Antiochus IV, came against Israel and committed the Abomination of Desolation in the Temple, desecrating the Law of Yahwah. Mattathias and his son Judas fought against all odds to eliminate their enemies and restore the Temple and the Law of Yahwah. Please read the entire story, starting in chapter one, to this point. The meaning of Hanukkah is dedication, dedication to Yahwah and His Law, dedication to the extent you are willing to lay down your life for the truth, as in this incredible story. This is celebrated in the Hebrew month of Casleu (currently Kislev) on the 25th day of that month. This event lasts for eight days and typically occurs in December on our calendar.
John 10:22 - The Messiah Kept Hanukkah
And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter.”
Thoughts: Mashiach was at the Temple during Hanukkah. It was significant for Mashiach to be in Jerusalem during this time. Although this was not specified in the Law of Yahwah, He still took time to celebrate Hanukkah, as it was a time of re-dedication to Him for His people.
1 Maccabees 4:56-60 - Is Hanukkah Gift Giving Original?
“And so they kept the dedication of the altar eight days and offered burnt offerings with gladness, and sacrificed the sacrifice of deliverance and praise. They decked also the forefront of the temple with crowns of gold, and with shields; and the gates and the chambers they renewed, and hanged doors upon them. Thus was there very great gladness among the people, for that the reproach of the heathen was put away. Moreover Judas and his brethren with the whole congregation of Israel ordained, that the days of the dedication of the altar should be kept in their season from year to year by the space of eight days, from the five and twentieth day of the month Casleu, with mirth and gladness. At that time also they builded up the mount Sion with high walls and strong towers round about, lest the Gentiles should come and tread it down as they had done before.”
Thoughts: This is the closest you will come to seeing Hanukkah gifts mentioned. Hanukkah was about being a light to the world. Why would we participate in Hanukkah gift giving to imitate a heathen holiday? Blood was shed during these battles to abolish heathen traditions like Christmas from the land of Israel. The only giving done that is chronicled is for Yahwah’s Temple. I don’t want to imitate the heathens in Hanukkah gift giving.
Matthew 5:14-16 & Philippians 2:14-15 - Being A Light
“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
“Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of Elohim, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;”
Thoughts: In the world, there is darkness. It will not get better. The closer we get to the end, the darker it will get. If there is to be a genuine revival, it will take Yahwah’s people being a light. How? By complete dedication to Him. In our relationship and in total obedience to His law. He will provide and be the light through us to the world if we are sold out, as the Maccabees were. Willing to give our lives for Yahwah as He did for us, but also willing to be a living sacrifice. The Maccabees were against all odds in the battles they fought, but because of their dedication to Yahwah, He delivered them with a mighty hand from an anti-mashiach-like figure. He can do the same for us in the last days. In their dedication, they were able to live so that Israel could once again be a light to the heathen. Will this story, thousands of years ago, be so different in the latter assembly?
“How disgraceful would the Maccabees judge a Christmas‑style gift exchange?”
1 | The starting point: gifts at mid‑winter came from a pagan feast
Roman Saturnalia (17‑23 December) climaxed with the Sigillaria, a day of exchanging toys, candles and trinkets; later Christians moved the custom to Christmas. Ancient sources even note that the gifts symbolized returning light after the solstice – a cosmological motif foreign to the Torah. Wikipedia
For the Maccabees, who fought to purge exactly such cultic symbolism from Judea, replicating Saturnalian gifts would already smell of idolatry.
2 | Assimilation was labelled “selling themselves to do evil”
1 Maccabees opens with Jews who “built a gymnasium according to Gentile custom … abandoned the holy covenant … and sold themselves to do evil.” Bible Gateway
To JudaMaccabee, a family participating in Hanukkah gift giving, wrapping presents beside the ḥanukkiyyah,h would look no different: another visible surrender to surrounding religious fashion.
3 | Mattathias’ oath of absolute non‑imitation
When ordered to sacrifice, Mattathias thundered: “Even if every nation obeys the king, I and my sons will keep the covenant … We will not turn aside, neither to the right nor to the left.” Bible Gateway
That manifesto leaves no room for “harmless borrowing.” If the surrounding nations mark December with religious presents, a Maccabee would deem any Jewish mimicry a direct breach of the oath.
What would the Maccabees say about Hanukkah gift giving?
- Historical context: 1 Maccabees 1 records Antiochus IV ordering Jews to abandon Torah practices and adopt Greek rites. Judah Maccabee’s revolt was against assimilation as much as oppression. My Jewish Learning
- Irony noted by historians: Hanukkah gifts and modern decorations echo the very Hellenistic culture the Maccabees sought to resist. TIME
Implication: Imitating a surrounding festival for social acceptance is the opposite of the holiday’s message of covenantal distinctiveness.

We proclaim one name as given to the disciples and early assembly on the Day of Pentecost. The only Name that was prophesied in the Old Blood Covenant that will be restored in the last days, the Name of יהוה. Not jesus, or any "shua" name such as yeshua, yahshua etc. Take His Name in baptism as Peter preached in Acts chapter 2.
Malachi 1:11 "For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith יהוה of hosts."
